Migrations, ranging from a forced exodus to a voluntary quest for a better future, were a major part of Arab history in the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, they continue to be a burning issue in the early years of the 21st.
The Arab-Israeli conflict has given rise to Palestinian refugee camps.
In other regions of the Arab world—notably the Western Sahara, Eritrea, Sudan—other wars and famine have forced populations to flee their countries.
Economic poverty is also driving the illegal immigration attempted by young people from the Sahel and Maghreb regions, where the Mediterranean crossing is the final, and much too often, fatal obstacle.
