Beirut, a capital battered by history but forever resilient, is the symbol of a multifaceted, industrious Middle East, an image of Mediterranean joie de vivre and a cultural crossroads at the juncture of Asia and Europe. Yet it has been the scene of recurrent violent conflicts, constantly fuelled by internal rivalries pitting different faiths against one another, as well as by foreign interference. Despite the destruction and massacres perpetrated on its land, Beirut has always fought to rekindle life and harmony beyond the chaos. The allure of this stricken yet illustrious city explains the emotion felt around the world in the wake of the deadly explosions that caused so much suffering this summer.
