The Nile river, the lifeline of Egypt thanks to its rich silt deposits, originates more than 6,000 kilometers from its immense delta, in the heart of the African continent. Since ancient times, the river has been a link between the Nubian, Abyssinian and Egyptian civilizations. Today, the countries upstream, Sudan and Ethiopia, are claiming their water rights to the Nile, on an equal share with Egypt, and enormous dams are changing the face of the river.
Nevertheless, the age-old fascination with the Nile has continued century after century, through accounts of the river by geographers, explorers, historians, travelers and artists.
This selection is just a taste of the AWI's rich heritage.
